The Weight of Words: How Public Reaction Altered a Moment in the Sky

In the bright promise of an historic flight that briefly carried six women to the edge of space, one of the crew members found that her return to Earth brought not just applause, but a wave of criticism that hit harder than she ever expected. Amanda Nguyen — a scientist, civil rights activist and the first Vietnamese-American woman to go into space with a Blue Origin mission — has said that the public backlash after the flight left her deeply depressed, overshadowing what should have been a triumph.

Nguyen’s journey into space in April 2025, aboard Blue Origin’s suborbital mission that included celebrities and professionals alike, was widely publicized as a celebration of diversity and achievement. Yet in the days and weeks that followed, social media and news commentary focused less on the science and symbolic significance and more on criticism of cost, environmental impact and perceived extravagance — an outpouring Nguyen described as “an avalanche of misogyny.” She wrote that the negative reaction felt like “billions of hostile impressions,” a volume of scrutiny she said “no human brain has evolved to endure.”

In an emotional Instagram post in late December, Nguyen recounted how in the aftermath of the flight, she couldn’t leave her Texas home for a week and was unable to get out of bed, overcome with grief and unable to speak, even when contacted by a senior colleague from Blue Origin. At one point she told fellow crew member Gayle King that her depression might last for years.

The episode was particularly painful for Nguyen because of her long personal and professional journey. A researcher in bioastronautics and an advocate for women’s health, she has also spent years working on civil rights issues — including founding the nonprofit Rise after surviving sexual assault in college. For her, the spaceflight had been both a scientific opportunity and a deeply symbolic moment tied to her family’s history, including her parents’ immigration to the United States as boat refugees.

Despite the emotional toll, Nguyen also acknowledged that the mission brought some positive outcomes. She noted that media attention helped spotlight her research and advocacy, opening doors for further discussions about women’s health and the role of science in diplomacy. Reflecting on her recovery eight months after the flight, she said the “fog of grief” has begun to lift, and she expressed gratitude for the support she has received from friends, her community and well-wishers.

Nguyen’s candid reflection highlights the complex intersection of achievement, public perception and mental health in the modern media era — especially when historical milestones collide with the pressures of a digital public square that can amplify criticism as much as celebration.
