The Victims Have Names Now, and the Work of Understanding Continues

There is a particular kind of collision that leaves behind not just wreckage but a chain of questions—each link forged in the seconds when one vehicle struck another, and another, and another, until the fire came. On Thursday afternoon in Calgary's northeast Saddle Ridge neighborhood, that chain unfolded in a matter of moments, and three people died inside a bus that became an inferno .

Calgary police have now identified all three victims of the eight-vehicle collision, and next of kin have been notified. The crash occurred just after 1 p.m. on Thursday when a city transit bus travelling north on Saddletowne Circle N.E. struck a truck in the same direction. The truck entered an adjacent lane, sideswiping an SUV before hitting a box truck. The bus continued north, struck a sedan, pushed it through the intersection, and then hit the rear of a second city transit bus .

During that collision, the natural gas tanks on the second bus ignited. Within seconds, the fire intensified into an explosion and a significant fire inside the bus. Three passengers on the second bus were found dead . The driver of that bus was able to escape. The driver of the first bus was transported to hospital with life-altering injuries and remains in intensive care .

Sixteen people sustained minor injuries, including a Calgary police officer who rushed onto the burning bus to save a child. Mayor Jeromy Farkas praised the officer's bravery, and police confirmed she is recovering at home . Mike Mahar, head of Calgary's transit union, noted that the operators involved were "very seasoned" and described the chain reaction as unusual. He suggested the natural gas equipment may have malfunctioned, as the fuel was venting from the top of the bus before the explosion .

Calgary Transit said in a statement that safety remains its highest priority and that all buses, including the 347 compressed natural gas buses in its fleet, are subject to regular maintenance inspections. The agency said it will work closely with investigators and conduct a review of its CNG operations . Police said it is too early to determine whether impairment, speed, or distraction contributed to the collision, and all possible factors remain under investigation .
