The University Said It Was Deeply Concerning, and It Was

A college campus is meant to be a place of inquiry and becoming, where young people learn not only what they think but who they are. When an allegation of sexual violence arrives in that space, it unsettles more than the individuals involved. It asks questions about safety, about responsibility, and about the distance between an institution's stated values and its lived reality.

The University of Chicago is now facing those questions. A 21-year-old woman reported that she was sexually assaulted early Sunday during a party at the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house near campus. She is not a student at the university, and the person of interest who has been identified is also not affiliated with the school .

According to Chicago police, the woman reported the assault around 1:50 a.m. Sunday. She went to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment. The university said the perpetrator fled the house after being confronted by another person .

The Chicago Sun-Times, citing the police report, said the woman told officers she had been drinking and dancing at the party before she began feeling unwell. Two of her friends later found her "not fully conscious" in a bathroom with a man, both partially undressed. The friends told police they had to force their way through several men who were "cheering and appearing to encourage the activity inside" .

Alpha Epsilon Pi's national organization said no fraternity members participated in or encouraged the alleged assault. "There is no evidence at all that any AEPi members participated in this assault or were aware of it while it was transpiring," said spokesperson Jonathan Pierce. The fraternity's University of Chicago chapter said its members rushed to help the woman after being alerted by one of her friends and ended the party immediately .

The university said it identified a person of interest and barred that individual from campus. "While fraternities are not Recognized Student Organizations at UChicago and thus have no formal affiliation with the University, all University students are subject to University policies and disciplinary procedures," the school said in a statement .

The case arrives at a moment of heightened attention to sexual violence on college campuses. At Cornell University, a woman's allegations that she was drugged and gang raped by fraternity members in 2024 led to internal disciplinary action but no criminal charges. Cornell announced this week it is banning parties at fraternity houses until next year .

Chicago police said no one had been charged as of Wednesday. The investigation remains ongoing.
