The Temple Was Full of Light, and the Darkness Waited Outside

There are moments when the distance between ordinary life and unspeakable violence narrows to the width of a parking lot. On a Sunday afternoon in Aurora, Illinois, families gathered at the Sri Venkateswara Swami Balaji Temple to observe the beginning of Sharad Navratri, a holiday of light and devotion. Among them were Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi and his family, who have worshiped at the temple for decades. What they did not know, as they stood in prayer, was that a young man from Palatine sat in his car outside, authorities say, waiting with a rifle that would not fire.

Alexandros Paporakis, 19, has been charged with making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons after prosecutors allege he drove to the temple with an AR-style rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and a tactical vest containing a patch displaying white supremacist imagery. According to court documents, he told a coworker at a Taco Bell in Arlington Heights that Sunday was going to be "a special day," and later called to say his gun had jammed and he had left "super fast".

The investigation began when that coworker reported receiving an eight-page document titled "Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter's Manifesto)," which prosecutors describe as containing white supremacist and neo-Nazi ideology and references to violence against people of South Asian descent. Police say Paporakis described himself in the document as "a sociopathic white supremacist Neo Nazi filled with hatred, fantasizing about mass murder nearly every day".

Surveillance video identified a red Acura registered to Paporakis entering the temple parking lot at approximately 12:25 p.m. and leaving thirteen minutes later. Officers arrested him later that day near his home. A search recovered a rifle, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and Nazi symbolism, according to police.

Krishnamoorthi, who said his parents had been at the temple all day Sunday, released a statement expressing horror at the alleged plot. "I am horrified that a white supremacist attempted to carry out a mass shooting targeting Indian Americans at the Hindu temple in Aurora where my family worships," he said. "My family and I were there when the attack was attempted last Sunday".

The congressman credited the coworker who alerted police, saying, "Every American deserves to live and worship without fear, and we must stand together against hatred in all its forms". The temple has implemented additional security measures, including increased armed security presence. India's Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep concern over the "reported anti-Hindu and racist nature of the alleged plot," calling for greater vigilance and decisive action to ensure the safety of the Indian community.

Paporakis remains in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 30. Investigators say they believe he was acting alone and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
