The Quiet Cost of Stolen Metal, Felt at Every Table

Thanksgiving weekend is meant for gratitude and gathering, for tables shared and meals prepared. For Second Harvest, Canada's largest food rescue organization, it became a weekend of repair and recovery. Early Sunday morning, someone cut through a chain-link fence at the charity's Etobicoke yard, entered on foot, and within minutes disabled seven of its eight delivery trucks—not by stealing the vehicles, but by removing the catalytic converters from their exhaust systems .

The theft left the charity scrambling. Second Harvest collects surplus food from grocers, producers, and distributors and redistributes it to more than 300 non-profit organizations across Toronto. Each truck is a link in that chain. When seven of them stopped, food stopped moving .

By Thursday morning, Toronto police had made an arrest. Acting Superintendent Jeff Bangild announced that officers from 22 Division executed a search warrant at a residence in Oakville and took 29-year-old Corey Peter Lane into custody. Lane faces three counts each of breaking and entering, failing to comply with a release order, and failing to comply with a probation order. The charges have not been tested in court .

Police allege that Lane is also responsible for two other catalytic converter thefts in the area—one on September 13 near North Queen Street and Kipling Avenue, and another early Sunday near The East Mall and North Queen Street. All three incidents, Bangild said, followed the same pattern: vehicles damaged, converters removed, suspects fleeing in a vehicle .

Tips from the public played a role in the arrest. After Second Harvest released surveillance footage, information came forward that led investigators to the Oakville residence. Tools used for removing catalytic converters were found during the search, though no converters were recovered. A second suspect and the suspect vehicle—described as a black Infiniti G25 sedan with black rims—remain outstanding .

Catalytic converters contain valuable metals and can be removed quickly, making them attractive targets for thieves. Bangild described the incidents as "crimes of opportunity," noting that multiple locations in south Etobicoke were hit. "It disrupted a business that's sole purpose is helping our own community," he said .

Second Harvest CEO Lori Nikkel estimated the damage at $80,000. The charity has insurance, but the deductibles are significant, and the trucks could be out of service for two to three weeks. Earlier this week, Aurora Foods, a Toronto family business, donated $60,000 to help with repairs—a gesture Nikkel described with gratitude .

For an organization whose daily work is to rescue food that would otherwise be wasted and deliver it to those who need it, the theft was a disruption not just to property, but to purpose. An arrest has been made. The investigation continues. And the trucks, slowly, will return to the road .
