The Quiet Battle for Elements: Japan Fortifies Rare Earth Supply

Japan has expanded its national stockpile of rare earth minerals by 40%, marking its most significant strategic resource move in a decade. Officials said the policy aims to shield domestic industries from potential Chinese export controls on critical materials used in batteries, semiconductors, and defense systems.

Tokyo is also finalizing new supply agreements with Australia and Vietnam, part of a broader Indo-Pacific resilience initiative. Analysts view the buildup as a necessary but costly hedge against geopolitical vulnerability — one that signals how minerals have become the new currency of national power.
