The Outbreak Is Over, but the Lesson Remains

There is a particular kind of relief that comes when a long struggle quietly ends—not with celebration or announcement, but with the simple absence of new cases. For more than a year and a half, Manitoba has lived with the weight of a measles outbreak that spread through communities, filled hospital beds, and reminded public health officials of a disease many had hoped belonged to the past. This week, that weight lifted.

Manitoba public health officials declared the outbreak over on Friday, after the last laboratory-confirmed case was identified in August. No new cases have been reported since. The outbreak, which began in February 2025, resulted in a total of 1,038 reported measles cases—931 confirmed and 107 probable .

The numbers tell a story of vulnerability. Eighty-seven percent of cases involved people who were either unvaccinated or whose immunization status was unknown . There were 52 measles-related hospitalizations, including six intensive care unit admissions, and half of those hospitalized were children under the age of 10 . Manitoba led the country in measles cases in 2026, reporting 680—more than half of the 1,121 cases recorded across Canada as of early October .

The outbreak peaked in February 2026, with 177 confirmed cases and 34 probable in a single month. From there, case numbers declined steadily, reaching two confirmed cases in August and none in September . Expanded vaccination eligibility criteria, which had allowed babies in hotspot regions to receive early doses, are no longer in effect. Children should now follow Manitoba's standard immunization schedule, with the first dose recommended at 12 months .

While Manitoba and the rest of Canada now have no active measles outbreaks, the province noted that transmission remains high in some parts of the world and outbreaks continue in the United States. Public health officials encouraged Manitobans to ensure their immunizations are up to date . For a province that spent eighteen months watching case counts rise and fall, the declaration brings a quiet return to normal—and a reminder that protection, once lost, is not easily regained.
