The One Who Walked Out of the Smoke

There is a kind of silence that hangs around survivors — a silence that arrives after every news cycle moves on, after every headline burns out.

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh is living inside that silence.

He was the only survivor of the Air India crash on June 12. The accident dominated global media for days — the images of broken fuselage, the urgent updates, the theories, the speculation. But he has now spoken about something the cameras rarely stay long enough to capture: the strange afterlife of being the one who lived.

This is a different kind of pressure. It is not about physical recovery. It’s the challenge of re-entering a world that kept moving while he was suspended between life and death. People expect resilience. People project meaning. But trauma doesn’t follow a screenplay. For a survivor, the real crash begins later — in the quiet.

He said he has learned to measure his days differently now. There is gratitude, yes. But also guilt. And also the obligation of redesigning a life that must be lived forward even when a part of it stayed behind in the wreckage.

This isn’t a morality story. It’s a human one. We tend to write narratives around disasters where heroes emerge with certainty and clarity. But most real survivors simply wake up every morning negotiating with memory.

The aviation report will one day become a document. Accountability may be assigned, or maybe argued over indefinitely. But he is the living evidence that life is not binary — that a single event can fracture time, and that recovery is not a destination but a perpetual negotiation.
