The Name Was Familiar; the Allegations Are New

There is a particular echo that follows some names through the justice system, a repetition that raises questions no one can fully answer. Robert Robin Cropearedwolf pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2023 death of CBC journalist Douglas Michael Finlay, a random shove on a Toronto sidewalk that ended a life. This week, his name appeared again.

Toronto police have identified Cropearedwolf, 47, as a suspect in a break and enter investigation that occurred early last month in the Dundas Street West and McCaul Street area. According to police, he allegedly entered a private property, broke into a locker secured with a combination lock, and stole personal belongings including bank cards. He then used the bank cards to make several purchases .

The details of the earlier case remain vivid in Toronto’s memory. On January 24, 2023, Finlay, a 73-year-old former CBC Radio producer, was walking along Danforth Avenue near Jones Avenue when he was shoved to the ground. Police described it as a “random attack.” He died a week later from his injuries .

Cropearedwolf turned himself in to police. In 2024, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter. On September 27, 2024, he was sentenced to three years in prison, but according to court documents, with time served, the sentence amounted to 20 months plus three years of probation .

The new investigation places him at the center of a different kind of alleged crime—one that involves private property, stolen bank cards, and purchases made in the aftermath. Police have not said whether they have located Cropearedwolf or whether he has been arrested. The investigation continues.

For the family of Douglas Finlay, the name that carries the weight of their loss is once again in the news, attached to new allegations. For the justice system, the case raises familiar questions about rehabilitation, monitoring, and the distance between a sentence served and a life changed. The court will determine what happens next. For now, the investigation remains open.
