The Hill Was Ready; the Water Was Not

In Calgary, the arrival of winter has always carried a certain rhythm—the first snow on the peaks, the gradual chill in the air, the anticipation of skis and snowboards carving through fresh powder. This year, that rhythm has been interrupted by something less predictable: the city's water supply.

WinSport announced Thursday that the opening of its Canada Olympic Park ski and snowboard hill, originally scheduled for November 20, has been delayed indefinitely. The reason is a set of water restrictions beginning November 4, when the city will temporarily shut down the Bearspaw South Feeder main for repairs. The restrictions are expected to last approximately four weeks and will significantly reduce the water available across Calgary, including a complete ban on outdoor water use .

For WinSport, the timing is unfortunate. November is a critical period for snowmaking, the weeks when the hill builds the base that will carry it through the season. Without sufficient water, that work cannot proceed. "While we know this uncertainty is disappointing for everyone looking forward to getting back on their skis or snowboard, WinSport supports the need to protect Calgary's water supply," the organization said in a statement .

WinSport's snowmaking team will be ready to begin as soon as conditions allow, the statement continued, and visitors are encouraged to watch for further updates. The season is still anticipated to run until March 28, 2027, weather permitting .

The water restrictions are not unexpected. The Bearspaw South Feeder main has required repairs before, and the city has implemented similar measures to manage supply during critical infrastructure work. For WinSport, the decision to delay is a recognition that the needs of the many—the city's water supply—must take precedence over the desires of the few, however passionate those desires may be.

For now, the hill waits. The snow guns are silent. And Calgary's skiers and snowboarders, who have learned to be patient with mountain weather, will need to be patient with something else this year.
