The Future May Need More Optimism

The pessimism surrounding economic and technological change is becoming an important social issue. McKinsey's Global Institute argues that historical evidence provides reasons for greater optimism, pointing to the extraordinary progress achieved over the past century. 24e532a6-3e36-4bf9-be8b-811b20da5e36.jpeg The challenge is translating that historical progress into confidence about the future. Young people today are entering an economy undergoing rapid technological change. Artificial intelligence, automation and digitalisation are transforming how businesses operate. Those changes create opportunities but also uncertainty. A worker may benefit from AI if the technology increases productivity and creates new opportunities. The same worker may feel threatened if automation changes the skills employers require faster than education systems can adapt. This makes preparation particularly important. Governments, schools and businesses need to help people develop skills that remain valuable as technology changes. The future is unlikely to resemble the past exactly. But history shows that societies can adapt to major technological transformations. The key question is whether the benefits are shared broadly enough for people to believe that progress is improving their own lives. That may ultimately determine whether optimism returns.
