The Center of Kyiv Holds Its Breath Again

There is a particular hour in a city when the ordinary and the catastrophic meet—when people are simply going about their day, walking to a meeting, sitting at a desk, and then the sky opens. In Kyiv on Monday afternoon, that hour arrived not with a single explosion but with a sustained, methodical campaign that turned the center of the capital into a scene of smoke, rescue ladders, and the sound of drones overhead.

Russian drone strikes across Ukraine killed at least seven people and wounded more than 50 on Monday, hitting apartment buildings, offices, data centers, and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in downtown Kyiv. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a woman was killed when a drone struck the academy building, setting it ablaze. Emergency teams searched for people trapped inside as some staff escaped the burning structure by climbing down firefighters' ladders from windows.

The attack was part of a round-the-clock bombardment that has become a grim rhythm for the Ukrainian capital. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described it as a campaign of "pure terror" against the civilian population, noting that for more than a week Russia has kept attacking Kyiv, disrupting normal life and destroying buildings. The strikes hit non-residential buildings in three districts—Obolonskyi, Darnytskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi—with 24 people injured in the city center alone, including three children.

The National Academy of Sciences building sits in close proximity to landmarks including the Taras Shevchenko University, the opera and ballet theater, and the German embassy—a central, symbolic stretch of the city that had been relatively spared from attack frequency until now. An aide to former National Security and Defense Council Secretary Volodymyr Horbulin was killed in the strike; Horbulin himself, one of the architects of Ukraine's missile and space programs, was at work when the building was hit and sustained minor injuries.

Beyond Kyiv, the toll was spread across the country. Four people died in the Kyiv region alone, including an Azerbaijani national. In the Dnipro region, three civilians were killed when a business center was struck. Kharkiv, Ukraine's second city, was hit overnight by guided aerial bombs, injuring 28 people including nine children. In the Black Sea port region of Odesa, a ship flying the Palau flag was attacked.

The weapons themselves have evolved in ways that make defense more difficult. Russia has sharply increased its use of jet-powered drones—from 350 in June to 1,500 in July and 2,800 in August—which fly at speeds of 400 to 600 kilometers per hour at altitudes of five kilometers. Ukraine's interception rate for these drones is around 60 percent, far below the 90 percent success rate against conventional drones.

The strikes came just days after Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha addressed the United Nations General Assembly, calling for international pressure to secure humanitarian access and evacuation corridors for civilians in Russian-occupied territories. In Kyiv, the rescue operations continued into the evening, with firefighters working through the smoke and rubble of a building that housed some of the country's most important scientific institutions. The woman who died there has not been publicly named. What is known is that she was at work when the drone arrived, in a building dedicated to research and discovery, on an afternoon that had begun like any other.
