The Bush Doof That Ended in Death

There is a particular kind of gathering that happens in the Australian bush—a temporary community of music and campfires, of people who leave the city behind to dance under stars and wake to birdsong. These events, known colloquially as “bush doofs,” carry a promise of escape and freedom, a brief suspension of ordinary rules. On Saturday night, near the town of Drake in northern New South Wales, that promise ended in tragedy.

Emergency services were called to a rural property on Leslie Creek Road about 11:30 p.m. after a man was found unresponsive among a group attending the event. Bystanders began first aid before police and paramedics took over, continuing CPR. The man, a 53-year-old from Nimbin, could not be revived .

A crime scene was established at the property, located about an hour west of Casino in a remote part of the Far North Coast. Police have not released a cause of death. Investigators are working to piece together what happened in the hours before the man was discovered .

The man from Nimbin—a town known for its alternative community and its proximity to the countercultural festival scene—was among a group gathered for the bush doof, an outdoor party often featuring electronic music and overnight camping. The property on Leslie Creek Road, isolated and surrounded by bushland, is the kind of place where such events are typically held: far from neighbors, beyond the reach of streetlights, accessible only by dirt roads .

Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. They have not indicated whether foul play is suspected, and inquiries are continuing .

For the community that gathered at Drake, what was meant to be a night of music and escape has become something else. A man is dead. The cause remains unknown. And the bush, which offered a temporary haven, now holds the scene of an investigation that will take time to resolve.
