The Brief Tenure and the Quiet Departure

There is a particular kind of brevity that speaks volumes—a resignation announcement measured in paragraphs, a thank-you note to superiors, a departure framed as a return to family. In Washington, such announcements arrive with their own quiet grammar, and the question that always follows is not what was said, but what was left unsaid.

Andrew Bailey, one of the FBI's two deputy directors, announced Monday that he is leaving the bureau after just over a year in the role. In a post on X, Bailey said he was "stepping down to return to my family in Missouri" and thanked President Trump, Attorney General Todd Blanche, and FBI Director Kash Patel for the opportunity to serve. FBI Director Patel responded with his own post, crediting Bailey for "dedicated service" and for instituting "critical reforms" .

Bailey's tenure was unusual from the start. He was appointed in September 2025 to a newly created "co-deputy director" position, serving alongside Dan Bongino—a conservative podcaster with no formal FBI experience. The arrangement was devised during a period of tension between FBI and Justice Department leadership over the handling of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. Bongino resigned earlier this year and returned to podcasting; Bailey remained, later sharing the deputy role with Christopher Raia, a career FBI agent .

The position of FBI deputy director was historically filled by a single career agent managing the day-to-day operations of a workforce of 38,000. Whether the agency will return to that precedent remains unclear .

Bailey's background was political rather than operational. He served as Missouri's attorney general before joining the FBI, and he was reportedly under consideration to lead the bureau before Trump's second inauguration. According to CNN, Trump interviewed Bailey at Mar-a-Lago in 2024 but ultimately was not impressed, saying Bailey did not fit the mold of the "legal bulldog" the president-elect wanted. Bailey instead received the co-deputy role .

During his tenure, Bailey maintained a low public profile but was present in January when FBI agents executed a search warrant at the main election facility in Fulton County, Georgia, as part of an election fraud investigation. He oversaw election security issues at the bureau—a portfolio that placed him at the center of some of the administration's most contentious priorities .

The circumstances of his departure have drawn speculation. CNN reported that relations between Bailey and Patel had "quickly cooled" shortly after Bailey's arrival, and that the two men were not close. A New York Times report indicated that Bailey and Raia had a contentious relationship with Patel and went long stretches without speaking . Bailey's last day at the FBI is Friday .

The FBI has seen a wave of departures under Patel's leadership, including mass purges of agents who worked on investigations Trump had criticized. Whether Bailey's resignation represents a continuation of that pattern or a personal decision to return home is a question that the announcement itself does not answer. What remains is a bureau in transition, with one fewer deputy at the helm and a question about whether the co-deputy model will survive.
