The Atlantic Sky Meets Western Waters: How an Atmospheric River Is Changing Washington

As winter rain clouds gather over the Pacific Northwest, Washington state is bracing for dangerous flooding that could displace tens of thousands of people across western parts of the state. Meteorologists have pinpointed a powerful atmospheric river — a long, moisture-rich band of warm air from the Pacific — dumping torrential rain and swelling rivers toward historic flood levels, raising alarms among officials and residents alike.

Heavy rain over several days has already pushed rivers over their banks in counties around Skagit, Snohomish, Pierce, King and other areas, prompting evacuation orders and rescues for people in low-lying floodplains. In Skagit County, authorities have urged residents within the 100-year floodplain of the Skagit River to move to higher ground as the river threatens to crest far above previous records.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency on Wednesday, warning that “lives will be at stake in the coming days” if flooding continues unchecked. Officials estimate that up to 100,000 residents may soon face evacuation orders, especially in areas most at risk of being inundated by overflowing rivers and levee breaches.

The National Weather Service has described the situation as highly dangerous, forecasting 18 major floods and 15 moderate floods statewide in the coming days. Rivers such as the Skagit, Skykomish, Snohomish and Snoqualmie are expected to reach major flood stages, potentially surpassing historical records. Landslides are also likely in steep terrain due to saturated soils.

Emergency response teams, including hundreds of National Guard members, have been mobilized to assist with evacuations, water rescues and logistics. Road closures — including sections of major highways — and power outages affecting thousands further complicate rescue and relief operations.

Residents in flood-prone zones are being urged to stay alert to emergency notifications, prepare to evacuate quickly if ordered, and avoid driving through standing or moving floodwaters. Authorities stress that the situation remains fluid and could worsen before rivers begin to recede later this week.
