Texas Homeowners Sue Musk’s SpaceX Over Starship Rocket Launches

LAGUNA VISTA, Texas – In a recently filed lawsuit, 80 homeowners in South Texas are suing SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, claiming that the company's extensive rocket testing activities have resulted in "massive" sonic booms that damaged their residences. The lawsuit was initiated on April 30, 2026, in the U.S. Southern District of Texas Court.

Plaintiffs contend that sonic blasts from at least 11 rocket tests over a two-year period have caused significant disturbances and physical damage to their homes, particularly from the testing of SpaceX’s Starship rockets, which stand approximately 400 feet tall. The suit accuses SpaceX of gross negligence and trespassing due to the loud blasts that have repeatedly impacted the local community.

The Force generated by the 33-engine booster during the Starship’s initial launch in 2023 reportedly destroyed the launch pad and sent debris nearly 1.2 kilometers away, highlighting the potentially destructive nature of the rocket tests. Plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial to claim damages, court costs, and attorney fees.

The properties belonging to the plaintiffs are situated in Laguna Vista, Port Isabel, and South Padre Island. Although the lawsuit does not specify the exact damages incurred, it describes that loud sonic booms can lead to significant harm to walls, windows, and roofs.

As SpaceX's testing operations increase in the South Texas region, residents are becoming increasingly concerned about the noise and safety. Despite inquiries, both SpaceX and the plaintiffs' attorney have yet to publicly comment on the lawsuit.

This legal action comes amid growing tensions regarding how private aerospace expansions may impact local communities, especially in areas where SpaceX has ramped up its activities and launched frequency. The outcome of this lawsuit could have lasting implications for both the company and affected homeowners.
