Terror in the Fields: Bandits Open Fire on Zamfara Farmers, Leaving 24 Dead and Many Missing

GUSAU, Nigeria — In one of the deadliest recent assaults on agricultural communities in northwest Nigeria, heavily armed bandits opened fire on local farmers working their lands in Zamfara State, killing at least 24 people and leaving dozens of others missing.

The human rights watchdog Amnesty International has raised the alarm over the massacre, calling for immediate government intervention to protect vulnerable rural populations.

The attack unfolded across several farming communities in Zamfara, a region long plagued by violent clashes between local communities and transient criminal networks locally referred to as "bandits."

According to local community leaders and survivors, the victims were actively clearing their fields and tending to crops when dozens of gunmen riding motorcycles suddenly swarmed the agricultural hub. Armed with sophisticated assault rifles, the bandits surrounded the fields and opened fire indiscriminately on the defenseless laborers.

"They came without warning," said one eyewitness who managed to flee into the nearby brush. "People were just trying to secure their livelihoods. When the shooting started, there was nowhere to run. They hunted people down as they tried to escape."

Amnesty International confirmed the initial death toll at 24, though rescue workers and residents fear the final number could rise significantly.

Beyond those confirmed dead, a large but currently unspecified number of farmers remain missing. While some are believed to be hiding in the surrounding forests, community members report that a significant portion of the missing were forcibly abducted by the bandits, who frequently use mass kidnappings to extort exorbitant ransoms from impoverished rural families.

The bodies of the deceased have been recovered by traumatized relatives and local vigilante groups, with mass burials taking place amid heavy grief and rising anger over the region's deteriorating security situation.

This latest massacre highlights the escalating security crisis in Zamfara State, where criminal gangs have systematically targeted farming communities. The violence has created a dual crisis: a rising human toll and a severe threat to regional food security.

Humanitarian organizations warn that because farmers are routinely attacked, abducted, or forced to pay hefty "taxes" to bandits just to access their own land, vast swathes of fertile ground are being abandoned. The resulting collapse in agricultural output is driving up food prices and pushing thousands of families toward starvation.

Amnesty International has strongly condemned the killings, urging the Nigerian government and security forces to move beyond reactive measures and deploy sustained protection for rural communities.

While the military has previously launched ground and air offensives against bandit hideouts in the sprawling forests of the northwest, locals argue that the response remains inadequate. Residents are calling for permanent security outposts near major farming corridors to prevent criminal syndicates from operating with impunity.
