Terror in Silame: Bandits Raid Tozo Village, Leaving 2 Dead and 2 Abducted

SILAME, Nigeria — Fear and tension have gripped communities across the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State after heavily armed bandits launched a deadly raid on Tozo village late on Thursday night, August 20, 2026 leaving two residents dead and two others abducted.

The assailants stormed the quiet agricultural village under the cover of darkness, riding on motorcycles and firing indiscriminately into the air to instill panic. Shocked residents fled into surrounding bushes as the gunmen moved through the settlement, breaking into homes and demanding valuables and livestock.

During the chaotic assault, two villagers were shot and killed as they attempted to flee or raise an alarm to alert neighboring communities. Before withdrawing into nearby forest reserves, the bandits forcefully seized two other residents, dragging them away into captivity.

Local vigilance groups quickly mobilized to secure the area alongside responding security forces, but the gunmen managed to escape into the dense terrain before a counter-offensive could be mounted. The attack on Tozo village highlights the persistent security challenges facing rural communities across Sokoto State, where rogue armed groups continue to launch hit-and-run assaults, execute kidnappings for ransom, and displace farming families.

Mourning families gathered early Friday morning to bury the two deceased victims in accordance with local rites. Meanwhile, community leaders and distraught relatives of the abducted victims have appealed to state authorities and security agencies to deploy additional tactical units to the region, track down the kidnappers, and secure the safe release of the hostages.

In addition to the immediate security response, local economic activity in Silame has ground to a near-total halt following the midnight assault. Farmers and market traders in Tozo and surrounding settlements have voiced deep concerns over venturing into their fields, fearing further ambushes or unexpected incursions by roving bands of armed assailants. This growing paralysis over daily agricultural routines threatens to worsen food insecurity across the district, as seasonal crops risk being left unharvested during peak farming months.
