Terror at Nicolway: Shoppers Scatter in Panic as Active Shooter Erupts Inside Mall

JOHANNESBURG — Heavily armed tactical units and emergency personnel converged on the prominent Nicolway Mall on Sunday afternoon, June 21, 2026 following reports of an active shooter inside the complex. The sound of sudden gunfire sent shockwaves through the upscale shopping center, forcing hundreds of afternoon patrons and retail staff into a state of sheer panic as they scrambled for cover.

The incident unfolded around 3:30 PM, typically a bustling peak hour for families, diners, and weekend shoppers. Witnesses reported hearing multiple distinct, echoing gunshots coming from the upper level of the mall, immediately followed by screaming.

"We were having coffee when we heard three loud bangs," said an eyewitness who hid in a nearby clothing boutique. "At first, people froze, but then a massive wave of people started sprinting toward the exits, shouting that there was a gunman. Store employees were amazing—they immediately pulled down their security shutters and brought us into the back rooms."

As the alarm sounded, mall security acted swiftly to trigger an emergency lockdown, locking doors and securing entry points to prevent further access while directing fleeing crowds safely out into the parking lots.

Within minutes, specialized units from the South African Police Service (SAPS) along with private security tactical teams arrived at the scene. Heavily armed officers, wearing tactical gear and wielding rifles, breached the complex to neutralize the threat and secure the building section by section.

Police established a wide perimeter around the property, blocking off access roads and instructing the public to completely avoid the area. Paramedics and emergency medical vehicles staged outside the main entrances to prepare for potential casualties.

Security teams moved systematically through the corridors, clearing large anchor stores and escorting terrified citizens who had barricaded themselves inside restrooms, dressing rooms, and storage areas out to safety.

While initial reports on social media pointed to an active mass casualty situation, law enforcement officials have urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified speculation. Early indications from medical first responders suggest that while several people are being treated for severe shock and minor injuries sustained during the stampede to exit the building, the exact number of gunshot victims remains under close assessment.

The motive behind the gunfire—whether a targeted armed robbery attempt or a localized dispute that spilled over into the public concourse—is currently being determined. Police are reviewing the mall's extensive network of high-definition closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to identify the individuals involved and ascertain if the shooter has fled or remains barricaded within the complex.
