Ten Years for a Moment That Nearly Took a Life

Some dangers arrive without warning, turning familiar streets into places of sudden fear. What begins as routine can, in a matter of seconds, become something else entirely — a moment when instinct, movement, and chance decide the difference between life and loss.

That moment unfolded in the Renfrewshire town of Paisley, where a police officer narrowly escaped serious harm during a violent confrontation that would later be described in court as resembling a scene from a horror film.

The incident occurred in May 2024 after a marked police vehicle was involved in a collision. When officers approached, the situation escalated rapidly. A man emerged from his car, retrieved a chainsaw, and began chasing a uniformed officer down the street with the blade running.

The officer ran for safety as members of the public looked on, some seeking shelter, others frozen by the suddenness of the threat. Footage later shown to the court captured the chaos of those moments — the sound of the engine, the speed of the pursuit, and the genuine fear faced by those nearby.

The officer was able to escape serious injury, and the man was eventually detained with assistance from other officers and a member of the public.

At the High Court, prosecutors told jurors that the attack was deliberate and life-threatening, arguing that the weapon involved left no room for doubt about the danger posed. The jury later convicted the man of attempted murder.

During sentencing, the judge spoke of the extreme seriousness of the offence, noting that a chainsaw is capable of inflicting fatal injuries within seconds. The court heard that the officer believed his life was in immediate danger during the pursuit.

The man was sentenced to ten years in prison, with the term backdated to when he was first remanded in custody following the incident.

Police Scotland said the outcome reflected the gravity of the attack and praised the composure and professionalism shown by the officer involved. Senior officers noted that while such incidents are rare, they highlight the unpredictable risks faced by those carrying out everyday policing duties.

No further charges are pending, and the case is now formally concluded.

As the sentence begins, the street where the incident unfolded has long returned to normal rhythm. Yet for those who witnessed it — and for the officer who ran that day — the memory remains a reminder of how quickly order can fracture, and how firmly the law responds when it does.
