Dublin, Ireland— A 17-year-old boy was arrested for murder at 10:15 p.m. Friday after a man in his 30s was beaten unconscious outside a commercial premises on Parnell Street and later died in hospital. Gardai said the assault lasted less than a minute but was brutal. The victim suffered severe head injuries and never regained consciousness.
The incident happened outside a late-night convenience store near the intersection with O'Connell Street Upper. Staff said the victim had just left the shop after buying cigarettes. An argument broke out with a group of three youths near the doorway. One youth then punched the man, knocking him to the ground, before kicking him repeatedly. The group fled toward Gardiner Street.
Bystanders called 112. Two off-duty nurses who were passing gave CPR until paramedics arrived at 10:28 p.m. The man was taken to the Mater Hospital with critical injuries. He was pronounced dead at 11:47 p.m. His family, from County Meath, was informed by a family liaison officer. A post-mortem is scheduled for today.
Gardai from Fitzgibbon Street Station launched a manhunt. Using CCTV from the shop and a Luas tram camera, they identified a teenager living in nearby Cabra. Armed units arrested him at his home at 1:30 a.m. Saturday. He was taken to Store Street Garda Station where he remains detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. Two other teenagers have been identified and are being sought for questioning.
"This was a senseless attack that turned a minor dispute into a homicide," a senior investigating officer said. He said the victim had no known connection to his attackers and was simply in the wrong place. A hammer was initially suspected but Gardai later confirmed only fists and kicks were used. Blood samples and clothing have been seized for forensic analysis.
The shop owner closed his store and said he is shaken. He said anti-social behavior outside his shop has increased since summer, with youths gathering to drink. Dublin City Council said it increased patrols on Parnell Street last month after complaints. Local businesses now demand more Garda presence and better lighting.
The area remained cordoned off until 3 a.m. while forensic teams photographed blood on the pavement and collected CCTV hard drives. The victim's name has not been released pending formal identification. The Garda Technical Bureau will examine footage frame by frame to build a timeline.
Gardai are appealing for anyone who was on Parnell Street between 9:45 and 10:30 p.m. Friday to come forward, especially anyone with mobile phone footage. The murder investigation remains active, with charges expected once the Director of Public Prosecutions reviews the file.
