Sydney, Australia— A commuter ferry carrying 127 passengers struck the concrete docking barrier at Circular Quay Wharf 3 at 8:22 a.m. on October 30, 2026, shattering windows on the lower deck and throwing morning commuters into seats and handrails.
The vessel, the Narrabeen-class MV Parramatta River, was inbound from Parramatta on the F3 line. Witnesses said it did not slow on final approach. It rode up slightly on the barrier and then slammed back down. The bow crumpled. The barrier buckled.
“The engines were still pushing,” said Daniel Crowe, a commuter on the upper deck. “People screamed. Bags went flying. Then it was just alarms.”
NSW Ambulance confirmed 18 people were assessed on the wharf. Seven were taken to Royal North Shore and St Vincent’s with fractures, head injuries, and chest trauma. Three crew members were among the injured. The rest were treated for shock.
Transport for NSW shut the wharf within minutes. Ferries were diverted to Wharf 4 and Wharf 2. The structure itself shifted. Engineers found cracked piles under the gangway and a displaced fender system. Divers were called to check the underwater supports.
Early focus is on the vessel’s control systems. The master told wharf staff the astern thrust did not engage when he ordered it. Nine News Australia reported the ferry had logged a propulsion delay fault two days earlier but was cleared to sail after a dockside check.
“We have the voyage data recorder and CCTV from the bridge,” said Chief Investigator Angus Mitchell of the Office of Transport Safety Investigations. “We will interview the crew, review maintenance logs, and examine whether procedures were followed.”
The ferry operator, Transdev Sydney Ferries, said the vessel is 14 years old and had passed its scheduled survey in August. The union said crew had raised concerns about inconsistent braking response on older Narrabeen-class boats.
The vessel remains pinned against the wharf. Passengers left jackets and laptops on board. Services on the F3 line will run at reduced capacity while Wharf 3 is closed.
