Switzerland Bans Imports and Sales of Fur Produced Through Cruel Methods

Switzerland has adopted a ban on importing and selling fur products made through methods defined as cruel to animals, becoming the first European country to restrict imports on welfare grounds. The rules take effect July 1, 2025, with a two-year transition period. Advocates welcomed the move but warned that exemptions for some instant-kill traps and weak certification could create loopholes. Israel remains the first country worldwide to ban fur sales, while Switzerland’s measure targets trade rather than domestic fur production
