Swiss City Returns Remains of Indigenous Ancestors to Chile

Basel-Stadt in Switzerland is returning two skeletons and a skull belonging to Kawésqar ancestors to Chile, following provenance research into their colonial-era acquisition. The remains were collected in Patagonia during the early twentieth century and later donated to Basel’s museums. Officials said the Indigenous community had not consented to the purchase. The remains will be transferred to Punta Arenas, where descendants will determine their final resting place. The restitution is being presented as a step toward restoring dignity and trust
