STOCKHOLM — Swedish police shot and wounded an armed man outside the Royal Palace in central Stockholm following reports of a disruptive individual carrying a weapon.
Emergency services and law enforcement units responded swiftly to the incident, which occurred near the Lejonbacken entrance on the northern side of the historic landmark.
Officers were dispatched to the royal residence after receiving urgent reports of a man acting erratically while brandishing a weapon. Upon arriving at the scene, responding officers confronted the suspect. When the individual refused to comply with police directives and continued to behave aggressively toward nearby palace guards, officers opened fire, striking the man.
"The man was hit and taken to hospital," Stockholm police spokeswoman Susanna Rinaldo confirmed. Medical officials stated that the suspect sustained serious injuries, though they are not considered life-threatening.
Law enforcement cordoned off the immediate perimeter surrounding the palace grounds, restricting pedestrian access while forensic teams gathered evidence at the scene.
Police confirmed that an investigation has been launched into charges of serious threats against a public official and aggravated weapon offenses. Authorities emphasized that the situation was quickly contained and there is no ongoing threat to the general public.
The Swedish Royal Court released a statement shortly after the incident, clarifying that members of the royal family were not in danger during the altercation. Security protocols at the palace were temporarily heightened, but scheduled official tours and daily operations outside the restricted crime scene were expected to resume once initial forensic work concluded.
Additionally, internal investigators from the Swedish Special Prosecution Office have opened a routine inquiry into the officers' use of firearms, which is standard procedure whenever police discharge weapons in the line of duty. Witnesses who were nearby during the confrontation continue to be interviewed as authorities work to establish the suspect's background and potential motive for the armed breach attempt.
