As the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran intensifies, a proliferation of AI-generated videos depicting the war has emerged, with content creators leveraging new technologies to produce misleading information for profit.
Experts at BBC Verify found that numerous examples of manipulated footage and unauthorized satellite imagery related to the conflict were clocking in hundreds of millions of views online. Timothy Graham, a digital media expert from the Queensland University of Technology, noted, “The scale is truly alarming, and this war has made it impossible to ignore now.”
The U.S. and Israel initiated their military operations against Iran on February 28, 2026, leading Iran to retaliate with drone and missile strikes across the region. In this chaotic environment, many users have turned to social media in search of real-time updates, only to encounter a barrage of synthetic footage.
To combat the spread of AI-generated misinformation, the platform X (formerly Twitter) recently announced that creators will be temporarily suspended from its monetization program if they post AI-generated conflict videos without appropriate labeling. This program compensates users whose content garners substantial engagement, exacerbating the issue as creators seek to maximize views for financial gain.
Experts warn that such misleading videos can severely undermine public trust in verified information and complicate efforts to document real events. Mahsa Alimardani from the Oxford Internet Institute stated, "Fake videos like these have a detrimental impact on people's trust... and make it much harder to document real evidence."
Emerging AI tools have made it easier for creators to produce convincing but false content. For example, fabricated satellite images derived from real but outdated images were circulated to falsely depict damage and conflict scenarios.
As the utilization of generative AI expands, the pipeline for creating and sharing misleading videos has become almost fully automated. Generative AI expert Henry Ajder remarked, “The number of tools available for producing realistic AI manipulations is unprecedented.”
Social media platforms are grappling with the challenge of balancing engagement-driven monetization while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of information. Experts note that this ongoing tension may continue to hinder efforts to address the growing misinformation epidemic exacerbated by the surge in AI-generated content.
