Sudanese Refugee Arrivals in Chad Surge 20-Fold as Humanitarian Aid Runs Short

More than 400 people a day have crossed from Sudan into eastern Chad over the past week, a 20-fold increase from recent months, the UNHCR said. They are fleeing fighting, air strikes, drone attacks, drought, and worsening conditions in Darfur, Kordofan, and Blue Nile. Only 18% of the $1.6 billion needed for this year has been funded, reducing food supplies, shelter, and relocation capacity. UNHCR warned that unmet needs could push refugees onward toward Europe after attempts to find safety.
