Sudan Ordnance Explosion: Two Children Killed In Unexploded Bomb Blast Outside Khartoum Today

Khartoum, Sudan—An unexploded artillery shell left behind from recent combat detonated in an open field outside the capital today, killing two children instantly and severely wounding three others. The victims, all between the ages of eight and twelve, discovered the metallic object while walking through an area that had seen heavy fighting three weeks prior. The explosion occurred when one of the children attempted to move the unexploded munition.

Local farmers working several hundred meters away rushed to the site after hearing the sharp detonation and seeing a cloud of black smoke. They found the survivors suffering from deep shrapnel wounds and severe burns. Lacking access to professional emergency vehicles, the farmers loaded the wounded children into the back of a private pickup truck to transport them to a makeshift clinic five miles away.

The medical staff at the rural clinic confirmed the deaths and stated that two of the injured children remain in critical condition with life-altering trauma. The facility lacks specialized pediatric surgical equipment and blood plasma, complicating efforts to stabilize the patients for transfer to a larger hospital. A local physician stated that ordnance injuries have become increasingly common as civilians return to contested zones.

Large swaths of agricultural land and residential outskirts around the capital remain heavily contaminated with unexploded mortars, landmines, and submunitions. Heavy seasonal rains have recently shifted loose topsoil, uncovering buried explosive remnants and making them visible in areas previously considered safe by local populations. No organized mine-clearance operations are active in the region due to the ongoing security breakdown.

Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly called for immediate funding to launch explosive ordnance risk education campaigns in displaced person camps. These programs aim to teach children to recognize the distinctive shapes of various munitions and report them to community leaders instead of touching them. Ongoing military movements and severed transport links prevent the deployment of specialized safety teams to these high-risk rural areas.

The parents of the victims gathered outside the clinic, demanding that local authorities secure the field where the blast occurred. The surrounding land contains several other suspected unexploded items visible from the main footpath. Local volunteers placed large stones and branches around the perimeter of the field to warn other residents to stay away.

Military authorities have not dispatched explosive ordnance disposal teams to clear the site, citing a lack of personnel and the risk of sniper fire from nearby contested sectors. The area remains highly volatile, with both warring factions frequently re-entering the outer suburbs to establish temporary defensive positions. This constant shifting of forces leaves behind fresh layers of unexploded hazards every week.

The three injured children remain under observation in the poorly equipped clinic as night falls, with their families waiting outside the gates for medical updates. The field where the explosion took place remains open and unmapped, presenting a continuous threat to the agricultural community.
