Student Who Punched Another Student Holding Pro-ICE Sign at Lake Zurich High School Received 2-Day Suspension

A viral incident at Lake Zurich High School has stirred significant attention after a student, Danny Spud, was punched while holding a pro-ICE sign amidst a protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on February 12. The confrontation was recorded using Spud's Ray-Ban Meta smartglasses and quickly gained traction on social media.

The encounter unfolded around 1:45 PM as students were engaged in a walkout-style protest advocating against ICE. Spud, a senior at the school, decided to counter-protest, holding a sign reading "I LOVE ICE." He expressed his viewpoint, stating, "I thought to myself, how can so many people be against law enforcement and officials trying to make our country better and safer?"

As Spud recorded himself and voiced his support for ICE, he encountered mixed reactions from fellow students. One student confronted him directly, threatening to punch him. Seconds later, the student followed through, striking Spud in the face. The altercation, which occurred near a security guard, prompted immediate intervention.

Following the incident, Spud reported receiving numerous death threats and having his social media accounts temporarily taken down, although they were later restored. After a meeting with school officials, he received a one-day in-school suspension for violating school policy by recording the confrontation.

The student who punched Spud reportedly served a two-day suspension, which coincided with a school holiday, allowing him to return to class shortly after. While the district opted not to pursue criminal charges against him, tensions remain as the incident continues to spark discussions on campus and online.
