Streets Turn to Rivers in Tilburg: Heavy Downpour Triggers Flash Flooding, Canal Overflows, Drivers Trapped

Tilburg, Netherlands— Heavy downpour and canal overflow led to flash flooding across Tilburg on October 22, 2026, trapping drivers in submerged cars and flooding homes.

The rain started at 3 p.m. and did not let up. In 90 minutes more than 60 millimeters fell. Drains could not cope. The Piushaven canal rose, overtopped its quays, and poured into surrounding streets. Water rose to knee height within 20 minutes.

Three drivers were caught on low-lying roads near the ring road. Their cars stalled in 80 centimeters of water. They climbed onto roofs and called for help. One woman had her child with her. Fire brigade teams waded in with boats and carried them out.

“We were driving, then suddenly the road was a lake. The engine cut. Water came through the doors,” said a driver rescued from his van. “I thought the car would float away.”

The city closed seven streets. Buses were diverted. Basements in the Oud-Noord district filled. Residents moved furniture upstairs and placed sandbags. One elderly couple was evacuated by inflatable raft from their ground-floor flat.

Fire crews and the water authority worked through the afternoon to pump water back into the canal system. They opened overflow gates and placed mobile pumps at three hotspots. The water began to recede after 6 p.m., leaving mud, leaves and trash.

The municipality said the sewer system was at capacity and the canal level was already high from days of rain. A spokesman said, “This was extreme local rain. We have seen more of these events. The system cannot take 60 millimeters in an hour.”

No injuries were reported beyond shock and mild hypothermia. Three cars remain submerged and will be towed once water drops. Homeowners have been told to report damage to insurers and not to touch electrical installations in flooded basements.

The city will assess whether additional pumping stations are needed. The streets are now open, but cleanup continues.
