Stolen Car Chaos: Two in Custody After Reckless Driving Spree Grips Tauranga

TAURANGA, NEW ZEALAND — Local residents were left shaken on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, after a stolen vehicle was seen weaving recklessly through midday traffic, prompting a swift police response that ended in two arrests. The incident, which spanned several suburbs, highlighted the growing concern over vehicle theft and public safety in the Bay of Plenty region.

The chaos began when police received multiple emergency calls regarding a vehicle being driven in a highly dangerous manner. Witnesses reported the car speeding, overtaking on blind corners, and narrowly missing pedestrians. Officers quickly identified the vehicle as one reported stolen earlier in the week from a nearby residential address. To ensure public safety, police units monitored its path and eventually utilized tactical maneuvers to bring the car to a controlled stop before any collisions occurred.

Following the successful interception of the vehicle, police secured the scene and took the occupants into custody. Two individuals were arrested at the scene without further incident. The pair is expected to face a variety of charges, including the unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving. Authorities are currently investigating whether the suspects are linked to other recent vehicle thefts reported in the Tauranga area.

The reckless driving spree caused significant, though temporary, disruption to local traffic as police cordoned off the arrest site for forensic processing.

"This was an incredibly dangerous situation that put innocent lives at risk," said a local police spokesperson. "We are grateful for the quick thinking of the public who reported the activity, allowing us to intervene before a tragedy occurred."

In light of the event, Tauranga police are urging vehicle owners to remain vigilant and ensure their cars are properly secured. Residents are encouraged to use security measures such as steering locks and to park in well-lit areas. Furthermore, police continue to ask the community to report any suspicious behavior or dangerous driving immediately by calling 111.

The two suspects remain in custody and are scheduled to appear in the Tauranga District Court later this week.
