Scientists recently revealed that spores of a common moss species, Physcomitrium patens, survived nine months affixed to the exterior of the International Space Station (ISS). The moss was not hidden or sheltered: it endured the most brutal conditions — vacuum, intense ultraviolet radiation, freezing cold, baking heat, and microgravity.

When the samples came back to Earth, researchers were quietly stunned. More than 80% of the spores remained viable. Even more remarkably, many of them germinated normally in laboratory conditions, ready to grow again.

The secret seems to lie in the structure of the moss’s reproductive form: the sporophyte. These are the spore-encasing capsules that shield the delicate cells within. In the space test, these sporophytes outperformed juvenile moss and stem-cell structures by far. Their protective casing may act like a natural armor, absorbing UV radiation and buffering against the harsh swings of temperature.

Interestingly, the researchers noted a drop in chlorophyll — about 20% less of the key photosynthetic pigment — in the space-exposed spores. Yet, this loss didn’t prevent the spores from growing again. The resilience of these tiny cells suggests deeply rooted evolutionary adaptations.

Using their return data, the team built a mathematical model. Their estimate? Under the same conditions, the spores might survive up to 5,600 days — that’s roughly 15 years — in space. Of course, the model is provisional, and more data is needed, but the possibility is striking.

Beyond the curiosity of survival, these findings carry real implications. If moss spores can endure long-term exposure, they might become part of future extraterrestrial ecosystems. On the moon or Mars, they could help with oxygen production, humidity control, or even soil formation. These hardy plants, among Earth’s earliest land colonizers, may become pioneers again — this time in alien worlds.
