At Stanford University, researchers have crossed into new scientific territory by using artificial intelligence to design DNA and print functioning viruses in the lab. According to reporting highlighted by MIT Technology Review, the team employed an algorithm called Evo that generated more than 300 possible genome variants. Out of these, 16 successfully infected E. coli bacteria—outperforming their natural viral counterparts in efficiency.

The research represents a major leap in synthetic biology, where machines increasingly guide discoveries once left to nature’s slow trial-and-error. By leveraging AI to not only analyze but also create DNA blueprints, the scientists have opened the door to the possibility of organisms that have no direct equivalent in the natural world. As the lead investigators noted in their findings, the next phase of this work is to push beyond reengineering viruses toward designing entirely new life forms.

While the accomplishment is celebrated as groundbreaking, it also raises profound ethical and safety questions. If machines can generate organisms more effective than nature’s own, how should humanity control and direct that power? Bioethicists argue that such research must be coupled with strong oversight to ensure it serves medicine, energy, or agriculture—rather than being misused.
