Srinagar Shockwave: Driver Arrested After Car Plows into 3 CRPF Personnel in Nowgam

SRINAGAR, Jammu and Kashmir — High security protocols along the key transit corridors of the Kashmir Valley were put to the test on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, after a vehicle struck three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel deployed in Srinagar’s Nowgam area. Law enforcement officials moved quickly following the incident, arresting the driver shortly after the collision took place.

The high-stakes event unfolded near the Taingan Bypass in Nowgam, a critical security sector located on the city’s outskirts.

According to official briefings provided by local security representatives, the three jawans belonged to D Company of the CRPF's 148 Battalion. At the time of the incident, the team was actively stationed at the Taingan Bypass to provide tight security oversight for the ongoing Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra—an annual pilgrimage that draws massive numbers of devotees and demands a heightened security blanket across J&K.

An unidentified vehicle reportedly plowed directly into the troop formation before attempting to flee the scene. The impact caused severe injuries to all three on-duty personnel, generating immediate chaos on the heavily guarded bypass.

Emergency protocols were immediately initiated by nearby security units. The three injured jawans were quickly evacuated from the bypass and rushed to the Ujala Cygnus Hospital in Nowgam for emergency medical attention. Hospital administrators and attending medical teams confirmed that while the personnel sustained multiple injuries from the impact, their vitals have been stabilized, and they are currently undergoing comprehensive treatment.

Meanwhile, a police dragnet swung into action along the highway. Moving swiftly to seal off escape routes, local police successfully intercepted the vehicle and took the driver into custody. "The driver involved in the incident was tracked down and arrested shortly after the accident," an official confirmed to local news agencies.

The Srinagar Police have officially taken cognizance of the incident and formally registered a case. While early indications point heavily toward a severe case of rash or negligent driving along the bypass, authorities have launched a meticulous investigation. Given the strategic sensitivity of the location and the ongoing Amarnath Yatra security grid, investigators are currently interrogating the driver to definitively rule out any malicious or targeted intent.
