South Korea Sentences Unification Church Leader to Two Years in Prison

Han Hak-ja, leader of South Korea’s Unification Church, has been sentenced to two years in prison by a Seoul court on bribery charges. Prosecutors accused the 83-year-old widow of church founder Sun Myung Moon of giving expensive gifts, including a designer handbag, to former First Lady Kim Keon Hee in exchange for political favors. Han denied wrongdoing and said she did not personally pass the gifts through an intermediary. Her lawyers said they will appeal the verdict. Kim is also serving a prison sentence for corruption-related offenses
