South Africa Mine Collapse Leaves Shift Workers Stranded Below Surface, Families Gather At Pithead, Operations Suspended

Rustenburg, South Africa— A mine shaft collapsed shortly after 6:00 a.m. deep underground in the platinum belt near Rustenburg, trapping at least 27 workers on the morning shift and cutting off ventilation to the lower levels.

The collapse hit Shaft 4B at a depth of about 800 meters. A section of hanging wall gave way, blocking the main access decline and the emergency ladderway. Surface control lost contact with the crew when dust choked radio links. A foreman on the level above said he heard a deep rumble, then silence.

The mine, operated by a major platinum producer, employs around 2,000 workers. The trapped crew were doing drilling and support work on Level 28. The company said rescue teams entered within an hour but were stopped 300 meters from the collapse by unstable rock and poor air. "The ground is still moving, we cannot risk more lives," a rescue captain said.

Families gathered at the mine gate by mid-morning, many having traveled from nearby villages. They waited under tents, watching the headgear. A union rep for the National Union of Mineworkers said, "We have warned about support pillars being cut too thin, production over safety, again." He demanded an independent investigation.

The Department of Mineral Resources sent inspectors to the site. South Africa's mining sector has seen fatality rates climb this year after years of decline. This shaft had a rockfall incident in June that injured two workers, records show.

The company said it was drilling a borehole to establish communication and pump air to the trapped section. Thermal cameras were lowered but showed no movement. Rescuers said oxygen levels in the blocked area were likely dropping.

By afternoon, a second access route was being cleared from a parallel decline, but progress was slow due to the need for roof bolting. Engineers said the collapse may have been triggered by seismic activity recorded overnight, a common occurrence in deep mines.

The mine suspended all operations. Production for the quarter will be impacted, but the company said its focus is on rescue, not output.

As darkness fell, drilling continued. No contact has been made with the trapped workers. The next 12 hours are considered critical.
