Solar Surpasses Nuclear Power Globally for the First Time

Solar power generated more electricity than nuclear globally in 2025 for the first time, according to the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2026. Solar generation rose by about 30%, while nuclear output increased 1.1% to 2,703 terawatt-hours. The report also found that, from March 2025 through June 2026, either solar or wind individually generated more electricity than nuclear each month. In March, April and May 2026, both sources independently outproduced nuclear. The figures highlight renewables’ rapid expansion alongside nuclear’s comparatively slow growth.
