Small Aircraft Crashes Into Suburban Yard In Canada, Pilot Killed, Homes Evacuated After Fuel Leak Reported

Toronto, Canada— A small twin-engine aircraft crashed into a suburban backyard in Brampton just after 2:00 p.m., killing the pilot and scattering wreckage across two properties, narrowly missing occupied homes.

The plane, a Beechcraft King Air C90, had taken off from Buttonville Municipal Airport 12 minutes earlier, bound for Ottawa. Flight tracking shows it climbed to 2,000 feet, then made a sharp left turn and lost altitude rapidly. Air traffic control lost radar contact over a residential area near Castlemore Road.

The aircraft hit a large maple tree, clipped a fence, and came to rest inverted in a backyard, its nose buried in a shed. Fuel leaked across the lawn. Neighbors ran out, thinking it was a car accident, then saw the plane. One resident said, "I was in my kitchen, heard a sputtering engine, then a bang that shook the house. I looked out and there was a plane in my neighbor's yard."

Brampton Fire and Emergency Services evacuated three homes due to fuel spill and fire risk. The pilot, the only person on board, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one on the ground was injured, though a family was home in the nearest house, about 15 meters from impact.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada dispatched a team from its Ontario office. Investigators said they will examine engine condition, maintenance records, and whether icing or mechanical failure played a role. Weather at the time was overcast with light winds, not severe.

The aircraft is registered to a private company used for charter flights. It had undergone an annual inspection in September, according to preliminary federal records. The pilot was an experienced commercial aviator with more than 3,000 hours.

Residents in the subdivision said small aircraft frequently fly low over their homes on approach to Buttonville, a busy general aviation field slated for eventual closure. Complaints about noise and flight paths have been filed for years.

Police kept the street closed as TSB investigators photographed the wreckage. The fuselage will be moved to a hangar for detailed examination. The coroner will conduct an identification.

The neighborhood remained cordoned off into the evening as hazmat crews cleaned fuel-contaminated soil. Officials said the cleanup could take days.
