Slovenia’s Triglav glacier has lost its final ice, photographs taken around October snowfall confirming the remnant had melted completely. The glacier, on Mount Triglav—the country’s highest peak—once covered about 40 hectares in the mid-1800s. It lost 93% of its area between 1983 and 2003, then persisted as a small patch for two more decades. Researchers say the loss removes a valuable climate record and a symbol of national identity. Slovenia’s smaller Skuta glacier remains, but is also shrinking.
