Sky-High Battle: Firefighting Planes Scramble as Massive Wildfire Rages in Bosnia

SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina — Emergency aerial crews are engaged in an intense battle against sweeping wildfires raging across rugged terrain in southern and western Bosnia and Herzegovina. With dense forests and dry brush fueling aggressive blazes, firefighting planes and helicopters have scrambled to support exhausted ground units attempting to protect threatened communities.

Strong winds and exceptionally dry summer conditions have accelerated the spread of multiple active blazes across steep, hard-to-reach mountainous areas. Ground forces faced severe operational challenges accessing remote ridge lines, prompting regional authorities to deploy specialized water-bombing aircraft and military helicopters.

Two Croatian Air Force Canadair CL-415 water-bombers crossed into Bosnian airspace following an emergency humanitarian request from Bosnian leadership, dropping thousands of liters of water over heavy ignition points in affected regions like Prozor-Rama.

"The steep slopes and wind make ground containment nearly impossible in several zones," reported one local civil protection official. "Aerial water drops are the key defense preventing these flames from descending into populated valleys."

The widespread nature of the blazes has sparked a coordinated emergency response involving local volunteer departments, armed forces personnel, and international assistance. Helicopters from the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina have been flying continuous sorties to drop water loads and transport personnel to active fire fronts near Bihać, Drvar, and Konjic.

In several instances, the intense fires crossed regional borders, prompting joint monitoring and resource sharing with neighboring Croatian authorities.

While water-bombing planes focus on suppressing the primary head of the fires along high-altitude forest tracts, ground crews are heavily focused on establishing defensive perimeters around rural villages. Firefighters continue to lay containment lines and monitor spot fires created by windblown embers.

Authorities remain on high alert as temperature forecasts indicate lingering heat and dry conditions, keeping aerial and ground teams deployed around the clock.
