Six names on a glass wall, and a country that remembers

There is a particular sound that fills the lawn of Parliament Hill on a late September morning—the skirl of bagpipes, the measured tread of boots on grass, the hush of hundreds gathered to remember. Canadian flags flew at half-mast as police officers from across the country marched to honour colleagues who did not come home. On Sunday, the Canadian Police and Peace Officers' annual memorial service recognized five police officers and one correctional services officer who died in the line of duty this year . Sometimes the most profound tributes are also the most simple: a name spoken aloud, a family embraced, a promise that the sacrifice will not be forgotten.

The six officers honoured represent a range of services and circumstances, each a life ended while serving the public. Ontario Provincial Police officer Brandon Malcolm died in a single-vehicle crash in April. His colleague Tarun Bali was fatally struck by a car in June . Two days after Bali's death, Toronto police officer Marc Pinizzotto was fatally shot while executing a search warrant related to an alleged "gun-for-hire" scheme in Toronto .

The ceremony also commemorated Sûreté du Québec officer Anais Fortin-Cozzens, who died in a car crash, and Montreal police officer Mohamed Benreouane, who was shot and killed in a gunfight that also claimed the lives of a civilian bystander and the alleged gunman . Nicolae Serban, a correctional services officer who died in a crash while transporting an inmate, was also recognized .

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree spoke at the ceremony, describing it as a chance to pay respects to fallen heroes and their families. "Not every police and peace officer makes it home," he said. "For the six officers we're honouring today, we remember their bravery and sacrifices" .

The memorial service has been held since 1978, and over 900 names have been added to the glass tablets that line the perimeter wall on Parliament Hill . Each name represents not only an officer but a family, a community, and a set of circumstances that ended in loss. The ritual of the service—the marching, the piper's lament, the lowering of flags—is a way of holding that collective memory.

In the days before the memorial, approximately 300 law enforcement professionals participated in the National Peace Officers' Memorial Run and Ride, covering about 460 kilometres over three days from Toronto to Ottawa . Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw, speaking at the start of the run, described the symbolic weight of the journey. "Every day, every single day, police officers run towards danger when others are running away," he said . The run also raised funds for causes supporting fallen officers' families, with more than $695,000 donated over the years .

The ceremony on Parliament Hill included a three-day memorial run from Toronto to Ottawa and drew hundreds of officers and family members.
