Six Juma'at Imams Abducted by Bandits En Route to Special Prayer Session in Zamfara

GUSAU, Nigeria — Six prominent Islamic clerics have been kidnapped by heavily armed bandits while traveling along the highway toward Talata Mafara, Zamfara State, where they were scheduled to lead a special prayer session for regional peace and security.

The ambush occurred late in the morning when armed assailants intercepted the convoy carrying the religious leaders along a vulnerable stretch of the rural transit corridor. Assailants emerging from nearby forest enclaves opened fire to disable the vehicles before forcing the clerics into the dense bush at gunpoint.

Local community members and passing motorists alerted law enforcement after discovering the abandoned, bullet-riddled vehicles along the roadside. Tactical units from the Nigeria Police Force, supported by elements of the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, quickly deployed to secure the scene and initiate tracking operations into the surrounding terrain.

Search-and-rescue teams are conducting joint sweeps across known bandit hideouts in the adjacent forest reserves. Military reconnaissance units have established mobile checkpoints along primary supply lines to prevent the armed group from moving the hostages out of the state.

"Our joint security tactical teams are actively pursuing the perpetrators and tracking the retreat routes into the forest," said a spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command. "We are mobilizing all available intelligence resources to secure the safe, unharmed release of all six clerics."

State police intelligence officers have launched a preliminary investigation into the operational profile of the abductors. Federal and state security agencies are examining regional communication channels to trace potential ransom demands or identify the specific armed faction responsible for the coordinated assault.

Following the abduction, the Zamfara State Government announced plans to restructure transit security frameworks across high-risk rural highways. State authorities, in consultation with national defense leadership, are establishing permanent armed highway patrols, expanding intelligence-sharing networks with community vigilante units, and initiating formal policy directives to mandate armed escorts for large religious and civic convoys traversing vulnerable corridors.
