Six Dead After Horrific Head-On Collision on N2 Highway Near KuGompo City

KUGOMPO CITY, Eastern Cape — A devastating, fiery head-on collision on the N2 highway near Mooiplaas has left at least six people dead, according to early reports from the Eastern Cape Department of Transport. The horrific accident occurred just outside KuGompo City as severe winter weather continues to batter the province.

According to provincial transport officials, the collision involved two vehicles, one of which was a sedan. Upon the violent impact, the sedan immediately burst into flames.

Emergency workers reported a harrowing scene, confirming that several occupants were tragically trapped inside the burning wreckage as the vehicle was consumed by the inferno. First responders, rapid response teams, and forensic investigators rushed to the site to manage the blaze and extricate the victims. Details surrounding the identities of the deceased remain unconfirmed as recovery operations continue.

The disaster comes amidst a wave of adverse weather conditions that have severely compromised road safety across large sections of the Eastern Cape. Torrential rains have left highways slick, while freezing temperatures have raised the threat of highly dangerous driving conditions.

Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose noted that a combination of wet and slippery roads, drastically reduced visibility and the possibility of black ice in high-lying areas have significantly amplified the risk of severe collisions on major transport routes.

As law enforcement officials investigate the exact cause of the head-on crash, the Department of Transport has issued a stern warning to all road users navigating the province's highways.

“The department appeals to all motorists to reduce speed, increase following distances, switch on their headlights, and avoid unnecessary travel where conditions are particularly hazardous,” Binqose said.
