Singapore’s Economic Horizon: Growth Forecasts Rise as Technology Gives the City-State Fresh Momentum

Singapore’s economic landscape has been moving with a faster rhythm than many expected at the beginning of the year. Behind the glass towers and manufacturing facilities, demand connected to technology and artificial intelligence has gathered strength, prompting economists to substantially raise their expectations for the country’s 2026 growth.

Private-sector economists surveyed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore lifted their median growth forecast for 2026 to 5%, from 3.5% previously. The revised projection follows stronger-than-expected economic performance during the first half of the year.

Singapore’s economy expanded 5.9% year over year in the second quarter, exceeding the 4.3% growth economists had expected in the previous survey. The economy had also expanded 6.3% in the first quarter, giving the first half of the year a particularly strong foundation.

Technology has been central to that momentum. Economists surveyed by the MAS identified a sustained AI-driven upturn in the technology cycle as a key potential support for Singapore’s economic outlook. Manufacturing and exports have benefited from stronger demand connected to electronics and technology-related products.

The improvement is not limited to technology companies themselves. Singapore’s position as a regional business, financial, logistics, and manufacturing center means that a stronger technology cycle can spread across different parts of the economy.

Manufacturing has consequently become one of the areas receiving greater attention. The latest survey placed expected manufacturing growth at 8.4%, while forecasts for finance, construction, and wholesale and retail trade were also relatively strong.

Yet beneath the brighter outlook are several uncertainties. Economists identified an escalation or prolonged conflict in the Middle East and the possibility of an AI bubble as important downside risks. A sudden reversal in technology investment could therefore affect a country whose external economy is closely connected to global trade and capital flows.

Inflation expectations, meanwhile, have eased. The median forecast for headline inflation in 2026 was lowered to 2.1%, while the projection for core inflation was reduced to 1.9%. The adjustments suggest that stronger economic activity has not necessarily translated into a comparable increase in expected price pressures.

Monetary policy remains another part of the economic landscape. Forty-five percent of respondents expected the MAS to tighten policy in October by increasing the slope of the Singapore dollar nominal effective exchange rate policy band, compared with 30% in the previous survey.

For Singapore, the stronger forecast creates a moment of renewed confidence but not complete certainty. The economy is benefiting from a powerful technology cycle, while its openness leaves it exposed to shifts in global demand. As the year moves toward its final months, the question is whether the current momentum can continue once the initial force of the technology wave begins to settle.
