Short-Haul Electric Flights Could Become a European Reality in Less Than Four Years

European travellers could see electric flights on popular short-haul routes by the early 2030s, as aircraft technology improves quickly. Aviation experts say electric and hybrid planes are becoming central to reducing dependence on imported jet fuel and lowering air and noise pollution. Some start-ups are working on electric aircraft that could cover up to around 500 kilometers, potentially fitting a large share of European routes. Initial operations may focus on smaller or rural connections where conventional rail replacement isn’t practical.
