Rioters looted shops in Frankfurt late Saturday as protests over the cost of living turned violent in several German cities. Demonstrations organized by the youth group Gen Z regelt had earlier drawn thousands, calling for better-funded schools, public services and opposition to compulsory military service. Police reported clashes in Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg, using water cannons to disperse crowds. In Frankfurt, shop windows were smashed, goods stolen and emergency workers targeted with fireworks, stones and bottles. Authorities said arrests were made; most daytime demonstrations had been peaceful.
