BUSHBUCKRIDGE, Mpumalanga — A night of election gatherings turned into a scene of panic and grief after a 57-year-old man was shot dead outside a voting station in Boikhutso Trust, near Dwarsloop in Bushbuckridge, during the early hours of Thursday morning.
The incident occurred around 12:15 AM as election officials inside the polling center were finalizing ballot counts and processing results. A crowd had gathered outside the perimeter gates of the voting station, with music playing from nearby vehicles as residents waited for the local election outcomes to be announced.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, two unknown gunmen suddenly approached the crowd and opened fire before fleeing the scene under the cover of darkness. Amid the noise and sudden commotion, bystanders initially did not realize someone had been hit until the gunfire subsided and the victim collapsed.
The 57-year-old victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. A family member rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. The police have launched a murder investigation, but no arrests have been made and the motive behind the shooting remains unknown.
Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise has ordered a full mobilization of resources to track down the perpetrators, appealing to anyone with relevant information to contact Crime Stop or submit tips via the MySAPS app. The tragic shooting has cast a dark shadow over the local electoral process, raising heightened concerns among community members and political representatives regarding security protocols around voting stations during late-night counting.
Local civic groups have voiced dismay over the sudden violence, urging authorities to increase police presence at polling venues to protect citizens participating in democratic activities. As forensic experts continue gathering evidence from the scene, law enforcement officials have assured the public that additional tactical units have been deployed across the municipality to maintain order.
Police maintain that while the shooting occurred near an official counting venue, it is too early to conclude whether the attack was politically motivated or linked to general criminal activity in the area. The community remains on edge as they await further developments in this tragic incident.
