She handed over the evidence of her harm; the screen went blank

When a woman calls the police to report domestic violence, she is performing an act of extraordinary trust. She is opening the door to strangers, handing over the evidence of what was done to her, and believing—against whatever experience might suggest otherwise—that the system will hold what she gives it. The allegation now emerging from Montreal's Station 39 describes what happens when that trust is not merely disappointed but actively betrayed.

According to reporting from Radio-Canada, a Montreal police officer is alleged to have deleted video evidence from the phone of a domestic violence victim in 2025. The officer and his female partner had responded to an emergency call at a residence in Montréal-Nord. The woman opened her phone to show them video of threats and assault. The male officer, upon watching the video, reportedly recognized the alleged aggressor and deleted the incriminating content in front of his partner . The female officer later reported his actions to two sergeants on duty. When her concerns were ignored, she escalated them further up the chain of command .

The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal has confirmed that the Quebec Crown prosecution's office is investigating allegations of misconduct and obstruction. The officer has been reassigned to administrative tasks and will not hold a public-facing role until the investigation concludes. The SPVM said the complaint originated from within the police force itself . The two sergeants who allegedly failed to act have been transferred within the organization .

The timing of the revelation is not incidental. Station 39 has been at the center of a racism scandal since June, when an entire team of sixteen officers was dismantled amid allegations of discriminatory acts. That file now rests with the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions . The new allegation emerged during the broader investigation into the station's culture, a detail that suggests the problem is not a single officer's lapse but something embedded in the way a unit has functioned.

Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada said her confidence "has been shaken by several police officers who cast a shadow—a serious shadow—on the exceptional work of other officers" . She said Police Chief Fady Dagher "has a lot of explaining to do to the citizens of Montreal" . The opposition leader at city hall, Ericka Alneus, said she was "outraged, and profoundly irritated," and asked how women can feel protected by police in light of the allegations .

For a woman who has already been harmed by someone close to her, the act of showing a video to an officer is a second act of vulnerability. It is a decision to make the private evidence of violence visible to the state, to let it be seen by people with the power to act. The allegation that an officer watched that evidence and erased it is not simply an allegation about destroyed data. It is an allegation about the destruction of the possibility that the next woman will trust enough to try.

The investigation continues. The officer has not been charged, and the allegations have not been proven. What is already visible, however, is a question that will outlast the case: what does a police force owe to the people whose trust it asks for, and what happens when that trust is met with a screen gone blank?
