She asked him to wait a year; he said he had one life to live

She asked him to wait a year; he said he had one life to live

There is a particular grief that arrives at a doorstep late at night, when the hours have stretched past hope and the mind has already begun to prepare itself for news it does not wish to receive. For Sonia Monk, that moment came around eleven o'clock on a Saturday night, when three officers and a chaplain stood at her door on Vancouver Island and told her that her son, Private Aidan Goulding, was among the four soldiers killed when a grass fire swept through Canadian Forces Base Wainwright. She had known, in the way that parents sometimes know, before they spoke. She did not want to open the door.

Goulding was twenty-three years old, from the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry . He had joined the military only in February, after quitting a steady job as a mechanic—work he loved, his mother said, because he was passionate about cars . But he had decided, in the quiet way that young men sometimes decide things, that he wanted something else. He told his mother he had one life to live, and he wanted to dedicate it to protecting his country.

Monk tried to talk him out of it, gently. She asked him to wait a year, given the state of the world, given the likelihood of deployment. He refused. He spoke to a recruiter, and they took him quickly . His goal, she said, was to work for the military's special operations and then move on to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service . He was, by her account, an exceptional athlete, a natural leader, a young man who kept everyone's spirits up. "He really was the light of my life," she told CBC .

The fire that killed him was fast and violent, moving a kilometer in thirty to sixty seconds when the wind shifted. Dozens more were injured, many critically. The four dead were Sgt. Morgan Wong of Edmonton, Pte. Shaun Farrell of Prince Albert, Pte. Aidan Goulding of North Vancouver, and Hayden Lykkemark of Langley, B.C. Three investigations are underway into what happened, and the military has said a board of inquiry will examine the circumstances.

Monk's account of her son is specific and ordinary in the way that grief often is. He always told her where he was going. He always told her he loved her . When the news broke about the fire, she and her other son, Wylder, texted Aidan relentlessly, waiting for a reply that did not come. Her husband kept saying he had a feeling it would not be Aidan. Then the doorbell rang.

There is no larger argument to be made here, no policy lesson that can be extracted from a mother's loss. There is only the fact of a young man who chose service over comfort, who left a job that paid well because he believed he had something more important to do, and who died in a training accident before he could do it. His mother described him as her beautiful son. That description is enough.
