“Shameful”: Greens Oppose Military Aid to Ukraine

There is a particular kind of criticism that lands with greater force when it comes from those who have lived under the aggression one claims to oppose—a criticism that does not merely disagree but asks, with painful directness, how you can claim solidarity while refusing to provide the means of survival. In Australia, the Greens have found themselves at the center of such a criticism. New leader David Shoebridge has confirmed that the party opposes Australia sending weapons and military equipment to Ukraine, arguing that military aid should only proceed with United Nations Security Council backing—a condition Russia would inevitably veto. The response has been swift, and it has come from the Ukrainian community, from the major parties, and from within the broader foreign policy establishment.

Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, issued a statement that carried the weight of a nation under attack. “I cannot believe, then, that the Greens actively seek an outcome where President Putin’s policies are imposed on Ukrainian society, we lose the social freedoms and equalities Australians enjoy, and our entire nation is swallowed up by Russia,” he said . He noted that Ukraine had surrendered its nuclear weapons and never engaged in military adventurism, in line with Greens principles—and was nonetheless invaded. “Ukraine cannot survive or defend itself without meaningful collective security support from other democracies,” he said .

Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy called the position “shameful,” noting that Australia has provided more than $1.6 billion in military assistance since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, including tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and ammunition . “To suggest that we should abandon the people of Ukraine in their valiant fight against Russian aggression is shameful,” he said . Coalition defence spokesman James Paterson described the policy as “morally repugnant and strategically reckless,” arguing that tying support to a UN Security Council resolution gives dictators a veto over whether Australia supports its friends and allies .

Shoebridge has defended the position, stating that the Greens support humanitarian aid, financial assistance, and harsher sanctions against Russia, and that “working with other countries to cut off the funding to Russia’s military is the clearest way we can show direct solidarity with Ukraine” . He has also called for a dramatic downgrading of the US-Australia alliance, including renegotiating the ANZUS treaty and evicting the US from Pine Gap . The party’s broader platform opposes the international arms trade as a matter of principle, a position rooted in concerns about complicity in atrocities .

But for the Ukrainian-Australian community, the principle rings hollow. Kateryna Argyrou, chair of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations, said refusing military support “in the name of peace and non-violence is deeply painful to the Ukrainian families who live with this reality every day” and showed Shoebridge was “out of touch with the Australian public” . A Lowy Institute poll from June found that 70 percent of Australians backed sending military aid to Ukraine . Adam Simpson of Adelaide University, writing for the Lowy Institute, framed the Greens’ position as a failure of nerve: “On the defining geopolitical question of this decade—arming a democracy under attack by an authoritarian aggressor—they have squibbed it” .

The debate cuts to a fundamental tension within progressive politics: how to reconcile a commitment to non-violence with the reality of a war of aggression that will not be stopped by words alone. The Greens argue that sanctions and humanitarian aid are the proper tools. Their critics argue that without weapons, Ukraine will not survive long enough for sanctions to work. For the Ukrainians watching from afar, the argument is not abstract. It is the difference between a future and no future at all.
